With Thanksgiving this week, there’s a lot of talk about gratitude—usually for the people in our lives, our health, our careers. But I also think this time of year is a really natural moment to pause and feel a little bit thankful for something we often overlook: our homes.

Around the holidays, a lot of homeowners start asking big questions: Should we upsize? Downsize? Move closer to work or family? Is next year the year we finally make a change?
Those are important conversations, and I’m always happy to dig into them with you. But before we jump to “what’s next,” it’s worth pausing—especially in this season of gratitude—to notice what’s already here. What’s working, what’s serving you, and what your current home has quietly given you over the years.
Even if you know you’ll move someday, there are some very real reasons to appreciate the home you’re in right now.
1. Your Home Has Quietly Been Building Your Net Worth
If you’ve owned your home in the DC metro area for a few years, there’s a good chance it has done some heavy lifting for your net worth behind the scenes. Between paying down your mortgage and market appreciation over time, your home has probably been building equity while you go about your daily life.
That equity can become:
You don’t have to check your home’s value every week (please don’t), but it’s worth appreciating that your home is not just where you live; it’s also a long-term financial tool that’s been working for you in the background.
2. It’s the Backdrop to Your Everyday Life (Not Just the Instagram Moments)
When we think about “dream homes,” we tend to picture the big moments: holiday tables, birthday parties, the perfect outdoor space. But the real gift of your current home is how it holds all the unglamorous, everyday parts of your life:
Those routines matter. They’re the little rhythms that keep your life moving, and your home has been quietly supporting them, day in and day out.
You don’t need a bigger kitchen or one more bedroom to be “allowed” to love where you live. You’re allowed to appreciate the way your current space already supports your life as it is today.
3. Your Location Comes With a Built-In Community
Your home isn’t just your floor plan and finishes—it’s also your surroundings:
Even if you’re not best friends with your neighbors, there’s real comfort in knowing your streets, your shortcuts, your favorite grocery store aisle layout. That familiarity is worth something.
If you ever do decide to move, you’re not just swapping houses—you’re changing your entire daily ecosystem. Taking a moment to recognize what you like about your current one is a good check-in: do you truly want a new home, or are you just feeling the normal seasonal itch for change?
4. The Imperfections Are Also Possibilities
Every home has a list. The “someday” projects. The quirks you notice every single day:
It’s easy to focus on what your home isn’t, especially when you’re scrolling through endless “after” photos online. But those imperfections are also potential.
Sometimes that looks like a larger project—new countertops, updated bathrooms, better lighting. Sometimes it’s smaller: rearranging furniture, finally organizing that closet, or painting the room you’ve been meaning to get to for two years.
You don’t have to do it all at once. Viewing your home as a work in progress, instead of a finished product you’re judging, can shift your relationship with it. You’re allowed to both love it now and change it over time.
5. You Have Control—and That’s Not Nothing
If you’ve ever lived in a rental where you couldn’t paint the walls, hang things where you wanted, or control who came in and out, you know how underrated it is to have real control over your own space.
In your own home, you get to decide:
Even if you’re in a condo building or a neighborhood with an HOA, you likely still have more control and stability than you did as a renter. That sense of agency—of being able to shape your environment over time—is a big part of why homeownership feels so different.
It’s okay to be grateful for that, even if your home isn’t your forever home or your “dream” home.
A Gentle Reminder: Loving Your Home Now Doesn’t Mean You’re Stuck Forever
Appreciating your current home doesn’t mean you’re committing to stay in it for the next 30 years. It just means you’re willing to honor this chapter before you move on to the next.
You can:
If you’re starting to wonder how your current home fits into your longer-term plans—or what your options might be in the next year or so—I’m always happy to be a sounding board. We can look at your home’s current value, talk about timing, and figure out whether it makes more sense to stay, sell, or simply keep gathering information for now.
In the meantime, as you’re setting the table, fluffing the guest pillows, or reheating leftovers in your own kitchen, take a second to notice one thing you genuinely appreciate about your home as it is today.
This season is all about gratitude—and your home deserves a little of that too!
