living in the DMV
In the DMV, the choice usually comes down to how you want to live, what you want to maintain, and where you want to be. For this article, when I say single-family, I’m including townhomes.

The core trade-off
Condos: Who they fit
Great if you want a lock-and-leave lifestyle, on-site amenities you’ll actually use (concierge, gym, package room, rooftop. Etc.), and walkability/transit over private yard space.

Single-Family (including Townhomes): Who they fit
Great if you want more space, storage, and outdoor living (yard, patio, roof deck), plus the autonomy to renovate on your timeline (subject to local rules and, for some townhomes, HOA guidelines).

Quick “which one” cheat sheet
Pick a Condo if you value low-maintenance living, amenities, and walkability.
Pick a Single-Family (incl. townhomes) if you value space, outdoor living, and control over improvements.
