Summer is one of the best times to enjoy your home. Backyard cookouts, evenings on the patio, and windows open on those cooler mornings are hard to beat. Unfortunately, we’re not the only ones who love the warm weather. Ants, mosquitoes, termites, and other pests become much more active this time of year.
The good news? A little preventative maintenance now can help you avoid much bigger headaches later.

Start With Your Landscaping
Your yard is the first line of defense against unwanted pests.
Trim shrubs and tree branches so they aren’t touching your home, keep mulch a few inches away from your foundation, and avoid letting leaves or yard debris pile up. These areas create ideal hiding spots for insects and can trap moisture near your home.
If you have firewood, store it off the ground and away from the house. It’s an easy step that can help discourage termites and other wood-loving pests.
Eliminate Standing Water
Mosquitoes don’t need much water to breed. Even something as small as a flowerpot saucer or a forgotten bucket can become a breeding ground.
Take a walk around your yard every week and dump out any standing water. Don’t forget to check:
It’s a quick habit that can make a noticeable difference during mosquito season.
Keep Ants Outside
Ants are often just looking for two things: food and water.
Wipe down kitchen counters regularly, sweep up crumbs, and store pantry staples in sealed containers when possible. Outside, rinse off recycling bins and keep trash cans tightly closed.
If you notice ants indoors, resist the urge to simply spray the trail. Finding where they’re getting in and sealing those entry points is usually a much more effective long-term solution.
Seal Up Entry Points
One of the easiest ways to keep pests out is to make it harder for them to get inside.
Check for gaps around doors, windows, utility lines, and your foundation. Replace worn weatherstripping, repair damaged window screens, and seal any cracks with the appropriate caulk.
These small projects don’t take long, but they can make a big difference.
Keep Moisture Under Control
Many pests are attracted to damp areas around your home.
Make sure gutters are flowing properly, downspouts direct water away from your foundation, and outdoor faucets or irrigation systems aren’t leaking. Inside, check under sinks, around your water heater, and in the basement or crawl space for signs of moisture.
Addressing water issues promptly doesn’t just help prevent pests—it also protects your home from other costly problems down the road.
A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way
Most pest problems don’t happen overnight. They build over time when conditions are just right.
Spending an hour or two checking your property, trimming landscaping, sealing small gaps, and eliminating standing water can go a long way toward keeping your home comfortable all summer long.
Like so many aspects of homeownership, staying ahead of maintenance is almost always easier, and less expensive, than dealing with a major problem after it starts. Your future self will thank you.
