living in the DMV
Once summer hits in the DMV, everyone is reminded just how aggressively hot and humid it gets here. But despite the heat, this is still the season for having people over. Pool days, cookouts, porch hangs once the sun goes down a little, kids running through sprinklers, friends staying late outside with a drink in hand… summer tends to make our homes feel a little fuller in the best way.
And the good news is, preparing your home for summer entertaining does not have to mean a massive project or expensive overhaul. Usually, it is the small touches and a little bit of prep that make your home feel welcoming, functional, and ready for guests.

One of the first places I always recommend focusing is outdoor seating and gathering space. You do not need a huge yard or an elaborate patio setup to host well. Even a small deck, front porch, or townhouse patio can feel inviting with a few intentional updates. Fresh outdoor cushions, string lights, potted plants, or simply rearranging furniture to encourage conversation can completely change how a space feels.
This is also a great time of year to tackle some outdoor maintenance items that may have gotten overlooked during the winter and spring. Pressure washing patios and walkways, cleaning outdoor furniture, touching up chipped paint, trimming landscaping, and refreshing mulch can instantly make your home feel cleaner and more polished. If you have a grill, now is the time to deep clean it before hosting season is in full swing.
For homeowners with pools, summer prep goes beyond aesthetics. Making sure gates latch properly, pool equipment is functioning correctly, and surrounding surfaces are safe and slip-resistant is important, especially if you will have kids or larger groups over. The same goes for checking outdoor lighting if gatherings may continue into the evening.
One thing I think people often overlook when hosting is flow. Before guests arrive, think through how people will move through your home and outdoor spaces. Is there enough room for people to set down drinks? Are there clear pathways between inside and outside? Is there a convenient spot for towels, sunscreen, or trash and recycling? Sometimes the most functional hosting updates are not the flashy ones, but the practical little details that make guests feel comfortable.
Summer entertaining season is also a good reminder that homes are meant to be enjoyed, not just maintained. I think sometimes homeowners put pressure on themselves for everything to feel “perfect” before having people over. In reality, no one remembers whether your mulch was freshly edged or if your patio furniture perfectly matched. People remember feeling welcomed and comfortable in your home.
And interestingly, this idea translates into real estate as well. Homes that feel warm, inviting, and well cared for tend to resonate emotionally with buyers too. Outdoor living spaces have become increasingly important over the last several years, and buyers absolutely notice when exterior spaces feel usable and intentional, even if they are relatively simple.
So whether you are hosting a big summer BBQ, a casual porch happy hour, or just having friends over for dinner outside, now is the perfect time to give your home a little seasonal refresh. A few thoughtful updates can go a long way in helping your home feel ready for all the memories summer tends to bring.
