living in the DMV
Spring has officially arrived in the DMV, and one of my favorite things this time of year is seeing neighborhoods come back to life. The flowers start blooming, porches get cleaned off after winter, and suddenly everything just feels a little brighter and more welcoming.
When people hear “curb appeal,” they often think of major landscaping projects or expensive exterior renovations. But honestly, some of the most impactful updates are also the simplest. Small touches can completely change how your home feels — both for you as the homeowner and for anyone visiting your property. And if you are thinking about selling in the next year or two, those first impressions matter even more than you may realize.
Here are a few easy ways to give your home a curb appeal refresh this May without taking on a massive project:

Add Seasonal Flowers
This is probably the easiest and highest-impact update you can make this time of year. Fresh flowers in planters, flower beds, or hanging baskets instantly make a home feel cared for and inviting.
You do not need to be a master gardener, either. Even a few colorful pots near the front door can make a huge difference. In the DMV, I often see homeowners use petunias, begonias, geraniums, hydrangeas, or boxwoods for easy seasonal color and texture.
Refresh Your Mulch
Nothing makes landscaping look cleaner faster than fresh mulch. It is one of those simple things that immediately makes a property feel polished and maintained.
Dark mulch especially creates a nice contrast with greenery and flowers and photographs really well if you are preparing your home for listing photos this spring or summer.
Pressure Wash Walkways and Siding
After winter, many homes accumulate dirt, pollen, mildew, and grime without homeowners even realizing it. A quick pressure wash on the front walkway, steps, siding, porch, or driveway can completely brighten the exterior of your home.
It is one of the best examples of a relatively inexpensive project with a surprisingly big visual payoff.
Update Your Front Porch
Your front porch sets the tone before someone even walks inside. A new doormat, updated house numbers, fresh pillows, or a couple of outdoor chairs can make the space feel warm and intentional.
Even if you are not selling, these little touches make coming home feel nicer every single day.
Touch Up Paint Where Needed
You do not necessarily need to repaint your entire exterior. Sometimes just touching up the front door, trim, shutters, or railings is enough to freshen everything up.
Front doors especially are worth paying attention to. A clean, freshly painted front door can become a focal point and make a home feel instantly more welcoming.
Do the Basic Maintenance
One of the biggest curb appeal killers is deferred maintenance. Overgrown bushes, weeds, dead plants, peeling paint, broken lights, or overflowing gutters all subtly signal neglect — even if the interior of the home is beautiful.
The good news is that most of these items are relatively manageable when addressed a little at a time.
At the end of the day, curb appeal is not really about perfection. It is about creating a home that feels welcoming, cared for, and inviting from the moment someone pulls up.
And the reality is, buyers absolutely form opinions before they ever walk through the front door. In real estate, I often say that buyers start emotionally connecting to a home the second they arrive at the curb. The exterior sets expectations for everything that follows.
Whether you are planning to sell soon or simply want to enjoy your home a little more this spring, May is the perfect time for a refresh. Sometimes a few flowers, a clean walkway, and a Saturday afternoon project are all it takes to make a home feel brand new again.
