living in the DMV
Short days, closed windows, and everyone home at once can make even a great house feel too small. Before you decide you’ve outgrown your home, let’s separate seasonal cabin fever from real, lasting friction—so you can take the right next step with confidence.

Step 1: Name the pain (and when it shows up)
If most complaints fade when the weather’s nice, you’re likely dealing with winter stir-crazy. If they spike in every season (or every life stage), you’re closer to “we’ve outgrown this.”
Step 2: Run the 30/90 Test
Step 3: Try the easy edits first (one weekend, big relief)
If these changes ease 60–70% of your stress, you’re in cabin-fever territory—not a move-right-now mandate.
Step 4: Spot the “move” signals
You may be truly outgrowing your home if at least four of these ring true year-round:
Step 5: Do a “live-like-it” trial
If trials flop despite full effort, a move—or a larger renovation—may be the right path.
Step 6: Compare costs (numbers bring clarity)
Often, a focused $1–3k “function-first” upgrade buys another 1–2 happy years. If your wish list needs walls moved and bathrooms added, run the move math.
Step 7: Use a simple decision framework
The bottom line
Feeling over your space in January is normal. If functional tweaks bring relief, you’re likely winter-weary—not truly outgrown. If your core needs—bedrooms, bathrooms, layout, commute—don’t work in any season, it might be time to plan a move or a larger project.
