That quiet week between Christmas and New Year is perfect for quick wins—no marathon clean-outs required. Set a 30-minute timer, pick one zone, and use my simple three-bin method: Keep (put away), Donate/Sell, Trash/Recycle. When the timer rings, you’re done. Do one or two blocks a day and you’ll roll into January lighter.
Ground rules (so this stays easy)
- Work one small zone at a time.
- Stand up the “reset” at the end: surfaces clear, floors visible, doors closing.
- Don’t overthink selling—if it won’t sell in 72 hours, donate it.
- Keep a donation bag by the door and schedule one pickup or drop-off at week’s end.
30-Minute Task Menu (pick 5–10 this week)
Entry & Drop Zone
- Empty the catch-all bowl, hang only current coats, corral winter accessories in a bin.
- Recycle old mail, stash gift receipts in one labeled envelope, wipe the console.
Living Room Reset
- Clear coffee/side tables, edit throw blankets and pillows, return books/games to one basket.
- Tuck cords with clips; remove unused remotes and extra candles.
Kitchen Counters (Speed Round)
- Remove every appliance you don’t use daily from counters and find an alternative storage place.
- Toss expired spices and duplicate gadgets; dedicate one “tea/coffee” drawer.
Fridge & Freezer Sweep
- Pitch science experiments and mystery containers.
- Group “eat first” items in a single bin; wipe shelves you just cleared.
Pantry “Front Shelf” Flip
- Pull everything on the first shelf, toss stale snacks, decant open bags, label once.
- Move oldest items to front; create a small “hosting kit” (napkins, candles, matches).
One Cabinet, One Drawer
- Choose the worst offender (Tupperware, junk drawer).
- Keep only matching lids; give each tool a defined spot.
Paper Triage
- Gather scattered mail, kids’ art, paperwork.
- Make three stacks: To Pay/Act, To File, Shred/Recycle. Handle the first pile now.
Linens & Towels
- Retire frayed towels/sheets to “rags/pet” and donate the rest.
- Keep two sets per bed/bath; fold and file vertically for visibility.
Bathrooms
- Empty one vanity, toss expired meds/beauty, keep daily items in a single caddy.
- Replace stained shower liners; wipe drawers before reloading.
Home Office Nook
- Clear the desktop, file or scan five lingering documents, empty the pencil cup.
- Set a tray for “inbox” so paper lands in one place.
Laundry Area
- Reunite orphan socks, toss empty bottles, decant detergent into one easy container.
- Add a small “stain kit” caddy and set a lint-bin or mini trash.
Utility Closet
- Keep one of each: lightbulb type, batteries, tape, extension cord.
- Label shelves; donate extra vases and random hardware.
Garage/Storage Shelf
- One shelf only: consolidate holiday bins, label clearly, sweep the floor space in front.
- Create a “returns” tote for post-holiday exchanges.
Decor Pack-Away (Damage-Free)
- Coil lights on cardboard, label by location, store heavy items low.
- Use garment bags for garlands; avoid tape on walls/floors when you take things down.
Car Cleanout (yes, it counts)
- Two bags: trash and “return to house.”
- Restock gloves, scraper, and a small tote for errands.
Digital Declutter (rainy day)
- Delete 200 photos (aim for duplicates/screenshots), empty downloads, unsubscribe from five promo emails.
- Create a “2026 Home Docs” folder for future receipts/warranties.
Donation & Disposal—Make It Frictionless
- Keep one donation bag visible and add to it all week.
- Schedule a pickup or choose a single drop-off time; don’t store “to donate” bags for months.
- Recycle electronics responsibly; shred any paper with personal info.
The bottom line
Decluttering doesn’t need a free weekend or a label maker. Give yourself 30 minutes, one zone, and a clear finish line. By New Year’s, your home will feel lighter, surfaces will breathe, and January you will be very proud of December you.
